About and methodology
Last updated: October 26, 2026
Smart Home Website is an independent publication about making a connected home work in practice: what to buy, what to skip, and how to keep the system understandable after the novelty wears off.
Who writes it
Articles are published under the house byline, Smart Home Website. There is no separate personal brand to follow and no roster of anonymous contributors. The site owns every claim it publishes.
How we research
Every product assessment is currently research-based. We have not physically tested the devices we write about. Instead, we work from manufacturer documentation, specifications, firmware notes, owner reports, standards bodies, government guidance and reputable independent reviews.
When a claim depends on a source, we link it. Articles close with a Sources section listing the material used. If a fact cannot be verified, we soften the claim or leave it out. We do not use "we tested" unless an actual test happened.
How we choose what to cover
Coverage is chosen for reader fit: the room, budget, household and technical comfort level the article is written for. Commission never decides inclusion, ranking or what "best" means. We include downsides and a "who should skip it" line because a recommendation without trade-offs is not useful.
How we make money
The site is reader-supported. Some links may be affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them at no extra cost to you. Articles with affiliate links carry a notice at the top, and the links themselves are marked. The full explanation is in the affiliate disclosure.
Readers can also support the site directly on Patreon, or leave a one-off tip through Stripe. Both are optional, do not unlock content, and do not change coverage or rankings.
We do not accept paid placements, sponsored rankings or pay-for-inclusion. Free review units, loans and press trips must be disclosed in the relevant article.
Accuracy, updates and corrections
Prices carry a date because they change. When an article is materially revised, it shows an "Updated" date in the article meta. If a product is discontinued or a claim no longer holds, we update or remove it.
Found something wrong? Email [email protected] or use the contact page. Corrections are welcome, especially stale prices, broken links and compatibility mistakes.
Privacy
The site has no accounts, comments or newsletter. Analytics and cookies are explained in the privacy policy.
